Bryn Athyn, Pa- The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team outshot Northern Virginia 56- 28 en route to a 7-1 victory in their home opener Sunday afternoon.
Terrence Johnson put the Lions on the board eleven minutes into the first period, scoring short- handed off a pass from Jordan Roth and Matthew Sertic. Johnson scored again at the 6:32 mark, assisted by Ray Norfo, and Drew Collins, giving Bryn Athyn a 2-0 lead. Less than one minute later, Blake McCurdy scored, off a pass from Roth, giving Bryn Athyn a 3-0 lead going into the second period.
Two and a half minutes into second period play, Roth passed the puck from the top of the crease, and connected with Johnson, who one timed it in, giving Bryn Athyn a commanding 4-0 lead. At the 4:39 mark, Johnson, assisted by Charlie Livens and Dustin Synnestvedt, netted his fourth goal of the game, with a shot off the post. Northern Virginia chipped away at Bryn Athyn's lead with 1:46 left in the second period, scoring their first goal of the game off a rebound in front of the net.
Eighteen minutes into the third period, Synnestvedt skated the puck up the ice and took a shot from the right side of the neutral zone, to record an unassisted goal. With 43 seconds left in the game, Blake McCurdy connected with a pass from Danny Triesler and Nick Tate, recording the final goal of the game.
Steve Cappas played well between the pipes, recording 27 saves.
Coach Chris Puscian expressed: "It was the best complete game we've played this year to date. We played hard start to finish, and kept our discipline. The new guys are improving and getting stronger every day, and I'm very happy with the way we're playing right now."
The Lions return to conference play Saturday, December 10th against Bloomsburg. The puck is set to drop at 2:30pm.
