Second-half surge powers Lions past Clarks Summit, 77-55

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – A 26-4 run during an 8:39 span of the second half allowed the Bryn Athyn College men's basketball team to pull away and defeat visiting Clarks Summit University 77-57 in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) contest Saturday afternoon in Asplundh Field House.

Bryn Athyn (4-10, 2-0 CSAC) owned a 37-29 advantage after scoring on its first possession of the second half. Clarks Summit (0-12, 0-1 CSAC) quickly trimmed the gap to two (37-35) at the 18:53 mark by scoring on its next three trips down the floor and prompting a timeout from Lion head coach Justin Baxter.

The timeout would be just the thing Bryn Athyn needed because the Lions came out and rattled off eight straight points, seven by Larry Stevenson III, to open up a 45-35 lead.

After Clarks Summit's Donovan McCrae knocked down a 3-pointer to pull the Defenders within seven, Bryn Athyn stormed away from the visitors with the next 18 of the next 19 points to take a 63-39 lead on a Stevenson III jumper with 10:14 left in the contest. Stevenson III led the surge, that had five different Lions contribute, with seven points.

The Lions' defensive effort played a huge role in the game-deciding run as the Defenders missed five shots and committed five turnovers.

Bryn Athyn took a game-high 72-44 on a Rahim Washington fastbreak layup with 7:12 left in the contest.

Stevenson III shot 11-of-20 from the field, 5-of-10 from behind the 3-point arc, to record a game-high 27 points. Anthony Burr added 13 points on 5-of-10 shooting, while Washington ended up with 10 points.

In the first half, the Lions erased a four-point deficit with a 9-1 run to move ahead 19-15 on a Stevenson III triple. After Clarks Summit fought back to level the score at 19, Bryn Athyn used a 10-2 spurt to go back ahead 29-21. The Lions led by as many as 10 (34-24) when Burr made two free throws 3:01 before halftime.

Reed Plantz was Clarks Summit's top scorer with 15 points.

Led by seven rebounds each from Saleem Chisholm and Washington, Bryn Athyn won the rebounding battle 47-39.

Bryn Athyn goes back on the road to take on Rosemont in a CSAC clash on Tuesday, Jan. 8 at 8 p.m.
