Men's ice hockey skates to 2-2 tie against Western New England

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. -- Connor Buick and Nikita Smirnov both found the back of the net for the Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team in a 2-2 draw against Western New England University Wednesday afternoon at Junge Pavilion.

Buick opened the scoring at the 11:46 mark of the first period with his third goal of the season. He started the play by winning a faceoff back to Riley Flynn. Flynn's shot attempt was blocked by a Golden Bear defender and the loose puck was picked up by Nick Malvasi at the left faceoff circle. Malvasi passed the puck to Buick in the slot where he would lift a backhand over a fallen Kevin Gollmer for the goal.

With the score still 1-0 in Bryn Athyn's favor in the third, Matt O'Dea scored the first of his two third-period goals on a shorthanded breakaway at 7:38 to level the score at one. On the same power play, Nikita Smirnov scored his third goal of the year just 23 seconds later on a one-timer from the left faceoff circle to put the Lions (5-7-1) back in front 2-1. Alex Tan and Julion Lever both picked up assists on the play.

The Bryn Athyn advantage would last just 2:16 as O'Dea struck for the second time at 10:17 when put a wrist shot from the left point over the glove of McKenzie Chalmers to knot the score at two.

Bryn Athyn controlled the play during overtime as the Lions fired seven shots at Gollmer, but couldn't find the game-winning goal.

Gollmer finished the game with 38  saves for Western New England (6-9-2), while Chalmers racked up 34 saves.

The Lions were 1-for-7 on the man advantage, while the Golden Bears went scoreless on six power-play opportunities.
