Johnson, Chalmers lead men's ice hockey to 2-1 win at SUNY Canton

CANTON, N.Y. – Brycon Johnson had a goal and an assist and McKenzie Chalmers stopped 36 shots as the Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team split its weekend series at SUNY Canton thanks to a 2-1 win over the Roos Sunday afternoon.

After an even opening 20 minutes of play that resulted in no scoring, Johnson and Chalmers ensured that the Lions (8-11-1) would have a 1-0 lead at the end of the second.

Johnson snapped the scoreless tie just 1:36 into the second period with his sixth goal of the season. Connor Buick started the sequence by forcing a turnover in the SUNY Canton (7-16-2) defensive zone. Johnson came flying in from the left point to collect the puck in the slot and fired a shot over the right shoulder of Austin Washkurak.

The final 18:24 of the second period belonged to Chalmers as made the Johnson goal stand up by stopping 18 shots to keep the Roos off the board.

Bryn Athyn sustained pressure in the offensive zone led to a Tanner Congdon goal that allowed the Lions to double their lead with 8:04 left in the game. Johnson started the sequence by firing a shot from the left point wide and into the boards. Nikita Smirnov tracked the puck down along the sideboards and threw it into the slot where Congdon slammed it home for his fifth goal of 2017-18.

Tyler Bullard broke up the Chalmers shutout attempt when he scored on the Roos' final shot of the game at 19:43. Joe Deveny and J.P. Langlois both assisted on the goal.

Washkurak ended the game with 19 saves.

Bryn Athyn begins its final weekend of the season with a trip to Lebanon Valley College on Friday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m.
