Ice hockey tripped up at Fredonia State

FREDONIA, N.Y. – The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team suffered a 5-1 setback to Fredonia State in the Steele Hall Ice Arena.

After a scoreless opening first period, Nikita Smirnov gave the Lions (1-4-0) a 1-0 advantage with a power play goal, his first of the season, just 61 seconds into the second period. Smirnov received the puck from Devon Becker at the right faceoff circle and then fired a wrist shot past the blocker of a screened Anton Rosen. Zach Pamaylaon also picked up an assist on the play.

Then, Fredonia (3-1-0) took control of the rest of the period by getting goals from three different players to take a 3-1 lead to the locker room for the second intermission. Jacob Haynes and Jimmy Morgan started the Fredonia surge with power-play goals to make the score 2-1 at the 12:38 mark. Charlie Manley added an even-strength goal with 1:24 left in the period of the Blue Devils' third goal.

In the third period, Haynes scored his second goal of the contest at 9:41 for the fourth goal and Todd Schauss recorded Fredonia's fifth goal at the 13:57 mark.

Haynes finished the game with two goals and one assist, while Manley (one goal, one assist) and Ethan Kirbis (two assists) each had two points.

McKenzie Chalmers stopped 43 of the 48 shots on goal he faced in the first 53:57 of action. Aiden Quaglino saw his first collegiate action and stopped the two shots that came his way in the last 6:03.

Rosen finished the game with 25 saves for the Blue Devils.

The Blue Devils went 2-for-5 on the power play and the Lions were 1-for-5. Fredonia had advantages in shots (50-26) and faceoffs (39-28).

Bryn Athyn will look to get back on track when the Lions take on Nazareth College on Saturday, Nov. 10 at 4 p.m.
