GWYNEDD VALLEY, Pa. – Jon Carr scored twice for the Bryn Athyn College men's lacrosse team in a season-opening 8-4 loss to host Gwynedd Mercy University Wednesday afternoon at the Gwynedd Mercy Athletic Complex.
After the Lions (0-1) and Griffins (2-1) traded first-quarter goals from Carr and Jordan Dzierzgowski, Gwynedd Mercy took a 2-1 lead at the 9:05 mark of the second quarter on a goal from Kohler Setley. Nolan Frame pulled the Lions even with his first goal of the year with 5:55 left in the half. Cameron Leech picked up an assist on the game-tying goal.
The Griffins scored two goals 1:08 apart to claim a 4-2 advantage at the half. Jacob Snavely put Gwynedd Mercy back in front with a man-up goal with 3:42 remaining. Dzierzgowski closed out the first-half scoring at 2:34 with an unassisted goal.
Carr's second goal of the game, coming 3:31 into the third quarter, brought the Lions within 4-3. The Griffins responded with goals from Daniel Decker and Joe Simpson to extend the margin to 6-3 with 5:39 left in the quarter.
Snavely gave the Griffins a match-high four-goal advantage at the 8:05 mark of the fourth quarter with his second goal of the day. Nolan Bosserman's first collegiate goal, coming in a man-up situation, cut the gap to 7-4. Dzierzgowski ended the Lions' hopes for a rally when he completed his hat-trick with 3:22 left in the match.
Bryn Athyn goalie Brad DePasquale recorded 12 saves and four ground balls. Chris Burns stopped 15 shots for the Griffins. Gwynedd Mercy owned a 40-26 shot advantage.
The Lions host Mount Saint Mary (N.Y.) for their home opener on Saturday, March 3 at 1 p.m. on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.
