MORRISVILLE, N.Y. – Jon Carr scored a team-high four goals, three in the fourth quarter, but the Bryn Athyn College men's lacrosse season came to an end with an 11-10 loss to Morrisville State in the championship match of the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Tournament Saturday evening on Drake Field.
The Lions (9-7) went into the final quarter trailing 10-8 after the Mustangs' Chris Dovi scored with 1:07 left in the third. Carr wasted little time getting Bryn Athyn back within a goal as he found the back of the net after a feed from behind the net by Andrew Coyle.
After Nick Geswaldo put Morrisville State (11-7) up 10-8, Bryn Athyn had a great opportunity to rally as Shawn Walberger committed a two-minute penalty for conduct to the head of Connor Buick with 6:56 left. Carr cashed in on the man-up opportunity at the 6:05 mark with an assist from Cameron Leech.
With the score sitting at 11-9, Carr gave the Lions life by scoring for the final time with 20.8 seconds remaining to make it an 11-10 contest. However, Morrisville State won the ensuing faceoff and ran out the clock to win the NEAC and get the conference's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
The Lions put the top-seeded Mustangs on their heels in the early stages of the first quarter thanks to goals by Coyle and Leech. Morrisville State struck back with a pair of goals in the final 5:03 of the quarter to level the match. Lion goalie Brad DePasquale was a huge reason the Lions were tied with the Mustangs after 15 minutes as he made six saves.
Morrisville State's momentum carried over into the second quarter, allowing the Mustangs to score twice in the first five minutes to go ahead 4-2. This time, Bryn Athyn had a response—goals from Carr and Nolan Frame—to tie the match at four. Frame's goal made him the first player in program history to record 200 career points.
The rally was short-lived as Morrisville State scored the final two goals of the half to lead 6-4 at the intermission.
Bryn Athyn ran off three straight goals in response to an Eric Fisher score to open the third quarter to even the match at seven. Riley Flynn scored at even strength, while Leech and Coyle had man-up goals.
Leech finished the match with a team-high five points (two goals, three assists), while Coyle contributed two goals and two assists.
Shane McCurdy was strong at the faceoff X, winning 14 of his 24 faceoffs, and added an assist.
Dovi ended the match with five goals for Morrisville State. Brad Biggs had two goals and two assists.
DePasquale finished the match with 15 shots. Morrisville State's Dan Sherlock made 12 stops.
The shot count was even at 34 and Bryn Athyn won the ground ball battle 30-28.
