BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College men's lacrosse team ran off 11 unanswered goals in the final 27 minutes of its non-conference contest against Immaculata to overpower the visiting Mighty Macs and pick up a 15-6 triumph Saturday afternoon on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.
Bryn Athyn (1-1) trailed 6-4 after Cole Metzger scored for Immaculata (1-2) just 48 seconds into the third quarter. After the Metzger goal, the Lions peppered the Mighty Mac net with 12 shot attempts, 10 of them getting on target.
Cameron Leech started the surge with the first of two third-quarter goals at the 12:09 mark to pull the Lions within one. Bryn Athyn would wait 4:23 to get the equalizing goal as Kyle Shaffer would find the back of the net at 6:46, assisted by Mike Haas, to level the score at six.
Two quick goals in the final 33 seconds of the third quarter would send Bryn Athyn to the fourth leading 8-6. Leech put the Lions ahead for the first time since they led 4-3 in the second quarter with his second goal of the afternoon. Jimmy Koniecki made it an 8-6 contest, scoring just 20 seconds later after receiving a pass from Leech.
The Lions kept the momentum going in the final quarter as they would find the back of the net seven times on 11 shots attempts, while holding the Mighty Macs to three shots, to pull away and win by a comfortable margin.
Hans Frazier kicked off the fourth quarter by streaking down the center of the field and then ripping a shot by Denton States just 1:58 into the quarter. One minute and 23 seconds later, Leech dove into the goalie crease and was able to stuff the ball passed States to complete his hat-trick and score Bryn Athyn's 10th goal.
James Vandegrift recorded the second of his game-high four goals at 9:49. Played two men up, Koniecki capped off a four-game afternoon 36 seconds after Vandegrif's goal. Justin Rallo made it a 13-6 contest and then Vandegrift would score twice in the final 4:21 to close out the game.
Despite outshooting Immaculata 8-1 in the first quarter, Bryn Athyn would only hold a 2-1 lead after 15 minutes of play. The Mighty Macs' Steve Long opened the scoring just 23 seconds into the game. The Lions would hold the Mighty Macs shotless the way of the quarter and get two goals from Koniecki to take the lead.
Immaculata came back in the second quarter to outscore Bryn Athyn 4-2, including the final two goals of the quarter to lead 5-4 at the break.
Leech led the Bryn Athyn offense with seven points (three goals, four assists), while Koniecki added an assist to his four-goal afternoon. Mike Haas tallied three assists. On the defensive end, Matt Traber racked up four ground balls and three caused turnovers.
Ethan Johnson had two goals and one assist to pace Immaculata, while Long ended up with two goals.
Brad DePasquale stopped three shots to earn his first win of the season. On the other end of the field, States made nine stops.
Bryn Athyn has a quick turnaround to get ready for its next game against FDU-Florham on Monday, March 11 at 4 p.m. on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.
