Lions can't overcome slow start in home loss to FDU-Florham

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College men's lacrosse team couldn't overcome a 6-0 second-quarter deficit against FDU-Florham Monday afternoon on General Ronald K. Nelson Field and fell to the visiting Devils, 10-5.

FDU-Florham (3-1) controlled the opening quarter of play as the Devils outshot the Lions (1-2) 12-3 and forced five Bryn Athyn turnovers to get out to a 3-0 lead. Pat Stewart opened the scoring 1:25 into the contest with an unassisted goal and was followed up by goals from Michael Warg and John Guido.

The Devils tacked on three more goals, two by John Belanger and a man-up goal off the stick of Michael Warg, in the first 6:39 of the second quarter to widen the gap to 6-0.

James Vandegrift got the Lions on the board with the shot from the right wing after getting a pass from Shane McCurdy at the 5:03 mark of the second.

After a scoreless stalemate for nearly the first 11 minutes of the third quarter, Jimmy Koniecki scored a diving, behind the back goal to cut the Bryn Athyn deficit to 6-2. Kyle Shaffer picked up an assist from behind the net.

The momentum would be short-lived because FDU Florham rattled off three consecutive goals in a 3:23 span to widen its lead to 9-2 after 45 minutes.

Vandegrift and the Devils' Zane Johnston traded goals in the first three minutes of the final quarter to keep the gap at seven (10-3). Vandegrift completed his second-straight hat trick with 4:29 left in the contest. Cameron Leech—who finished the game with three points—got into the goal column as he dove into the crease and beat Dan Schlupp with two seconds remaining.

Belanger finished with a game-high four points (two goals, two assists), while Warg added three points (two goals, one assist). Johnston scored two goals.

Adam Reifer recorded 12 saves in the FDU Florham crease before being lifted for Schlupp inside the final two minutes. Brad DePasquale made 10 saves for the Lions.
