Lions edged out by Kean despite record day from DePasquale

UNION, N.J. – Bryn Athyn College men's lacrosse goalie Brad DePasquale stopped a career-high and program-record 26 shots, but it wouldn't be enough for the Lions as they suffered a 7-6 Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) loss to Kean University Saturday afternoon on Kean University Alumni Field.

DePasquale broke the Bryn Athyn record of 24 saves set by Robert Moran on April 24, 2014, a 20-4 loss to Immaculata. It was the fourth game in Lion history in which a Bryn Athyn goalie has made at least 20 saves in a game, the second of the season for DePasquale. DePasquale's previous career high was 20 stops against #6 York on March 23, 2019—a 13-4 loss.

On the offensive side of the field, James Vandegrift led the Bryn Athyn attack (2-6, 1-1 CSAC) with two goals and one assist. Cameron Leech and Kyle Shaffer both scored twice.

After Kean (6-4, 1-1 CSAC) took an early 1-0 lead on a Tyler Roberto goal, Vandegrift and Leech responded with goals separated by 3:08 to pull added 2-1 with eight minutes left in the first quarter. The Cougars leveled the score at two when Mike Snellen scored at the 2:34 mark.

Kean went back in front just 2:55 into the second quarter thanks to a Matthew Schwartz tally. The teams would go into half even at three on Shaffer's first goal of the day. DePasquale had 17 saves at half—eight in the first quarter and nine in the second.

Shaffer got the Lions' second half off to a strong start by scoring for the second time 2:11 into the third quarter to put Bryn Athyn back in front 4-3. With the Lions leading 5-4, Kean ran off three straight goals—scored by Kevin Dolan, Nick Moffa, and Tommy Pellegrino—in a 39-second span to storm ahead 7-5. Dolan's goal was scored on the man-up.

Bryn Athyn was only able to pull one goal back in the fourth with Leech scoring at the 4:05 mark.

Kean's Ryan Seib recorded 12 saves.

The Cougars owned a 56-29 advantage in shots.

Bryn Athyn returns home to face Keystone in a CSAC match on Tuesday, April 9 at 4 p.m.
