Lions fall to Stockton in CSAC Tournament semifinals to end 2019 season

GALLOWAY, N.J. -- The 2019 Bryn Athyn College men's lacrosse team's season came to an end after a 24-7 loss to Stockton in the semifinal round of the Colonial States Athletic Conference Tournament Saturday night.

Bryn Athyn ends its campaign at 4-9 overall. Stockton is now 16-2 overall and will face Montclair State for the CSAC championship next Saturday.

The top-seeded Ospreys wasted little time getting their offense going, scoring the opening five goals to take a 5-0 lead just past the midway point of the first quarter. Bryn Athyn answered back with the first of three Cameron Leech goals and a James Koniecki goal, assisted by James Vandegrift, to trim the gap to three at the 2:23 mark. Stockton's Erik Anderson beat the buzzer to end the quarter to record Stockton's sixth goal and extend the gap to four.

Stockton used the momentum from Anderson's goal to rattle off six consecutive goals in an 8:09 span to widen the gap to 12-2. Thanks to a pair of unassisted goals from Shane McCurdy and Vandegrift, the Lions got back to 12-4 at the 4:56 mark. Stockton's Luc Swedlund and Koniecki traded goals in the final 3:54 to make the score 13-5 at the break.

The third quarter was all Stockton as the Ospreys outshot the Lions 20-6, forced nine turnovers, and scored all seven of the quarter's goals to widen the margin to 20-5.

With the score sitting at 22-5, Leech completed his hat trick with two of the match's next three goals to close the hap to 23-7 with 8:09 left in the game.

Bryn Athyn goalie Brad DePasquale turned in a strong effort in the defeat by stopping 21 shots—the second-most in his career—and picking up four ground balls.

Swedlund (seven goals, three assists) and Anderson (six goals, four assists) led the Stockton offense with 10 points each. Peter Burke and Eric Ellis each had three goals and one assist, while Dante Poli recorded two goals and two assists. Matt Thermann won 17 faceoffs and picked up seven ground balls. Justin Ruiz was the winning goalie with a five-save performance. Stockton outshot Bryn Athyn 72-25.
