BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Matheus Souza posted his first career hat-trick to lead the Bryn Athyn College men's soccer team to its first win of 2018, 5-1 over Penn State Lehigh Valley in a non-conference match Thursday night on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.
Kevin Conroy got the Lions (1-4-0) off to a fast start as he blistered a shot from 30 yards away that bounced off of keeper Trevor Rockwell's hands and into the net just over 11 minutes into the match.
Souza scored the first of three straight goals just 1:28 after Conroy's opener and he slammed home a Matheus Chaves cross from the left side of the penalty area at 12:50. The lead grew to 3-0 when Souza tracked down a long ball, dribbled past two Nittany Lion (0-1-0) defenders, and rocketed a shot into the upper right corner of the net just 53 seconds into the second half. Souza completed his natural hat-trick with a penalty kick goal at the 57:55 mark.
Bobby Shoemaker got Penn State Lehigh Valley on the board at 73:22 on a loose ball in the Bryn Athyn penalty area and snuck the ball inside the right post.
Shane McCurdy made three saves in the Lion net to earn his first career win. Rockwell finished with five saves in the first half, while Nick Miller had three saves during the second half.
Bryn Athyn outshot Penn State Lehigh Valley 18-12 and had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks.
