Bryn Athyn, Pa.- The Bryn Athyn College women's lacrosse team came from behind to defeat Hood 9-8 in Saturday afternoon action.
Emma Gross led the Lions with four goals. Haley Schmucker notched three goals, while Sierra Asplundh added two goals.
Hood got on the board early, scoring two goals in the first two minutes of play. Schmucker scored at 27:15 to get the Lions on the board. At 22:19 Erika Hyatt took a shot on goal, it was blocked, and Gross picked up the ground ball to score from the left side and tie the game at 2-2. Hood scored three quick goals to take a 5-2 lead. At 7:27, Schmucker scored through traffic to bring the Lions within two. The Blazers notched another goal with 52 seconds left to take a 6-3 lead going into the break.
At 26:55, Gross scored the first goal of the second half top left shelf to bring the Lions within two. At 25:16, Karla Hyatt blocked a shot on a Hood breakaway to keep the Blazers off the board. At 22:42, Schmucker notched her third goal of the game to cut the Blazer lead to one. At 20:23, Asplundh scored to tie the game at 6-6. Gross notched a goal following a foul on a free position shot at 13:13 to give Bryn Athyn a 7-6 lead. Asplundh scored 22 seconds later to put the Lions on top by two. At 6:06, Schmucker found Gross inside the fan from behind the net to give Bryn Athyn a three goal lead. Hood notched their first goal of the second at 3:31 to cut the Lion lead to two. The Blazers came within one at 1:23, but it wasn't enough, as Bryn Athyn's defense held strong, defeating Hood 9-8.
Head Coach Spring Silverman expressed, "The Ladies played as a team today. They focused on possession and fought hard on every ground ball, and had great connections in transition. I'm very proud of them for taking home the first win on our new field!"
The Lions return to the field Tuesday, March 25th to host Lancaster Bible. The game is slated for 4:00pm.
