BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Bri Lennox scored all five of the Bryn Athyn College women's lacrosse team's goals on free-position shots as the Lions dropped its 2019 season opener to SUNY Maritime Friday afternoon on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.
Lennox—who scored on all five of her free-position attempts—got the Lions' off to a fast start as she recorded the first goal of the 2019 season and the opening goal of the contest with just 3:22 gone. After SUNY Maritime (3-2) ran off their consecutive goals to go up 3-1, Lennox came through with her second free-position goal to bring the Lions within one with 8:39 left in the half. Krista Deleva pushed the Privateer advantage to 5-2 at the 5:35 mark with a pair of goals separated by 91 seconds. Lennox and Catherine Pfundstein traded goals in the final 3:25 of the first half to send the teams to the break with SUNY Maritime leading 6-3.
The second half was all Privateers as the visitors won all 12 second-half draw controls, outshot the Lions 20-8, and outscored the Lions 10-2. Lennox broke a string of six straight SUNY Maritime goals with her fourth free-position goal of the afternoon at the 13:51 mark of the second half to make the score 12-4. With the score sitting at 16-4, Lennox notched her fifth free-position goal with 4:53 remaining.
It was the second time in Lennox's career that she scored on five free-position attempts. Lennox previously accomplished the feat on May 1, 2018 in the North Eastern Athletic Conference semifinals during a 19-10 win over Wells. Lennox was 5-for-6 on free positions.
Sarah Reed led the Lions (0-1) on the defensive side of the field with five ground balls and five caused turnovers, while Payton Gormley had four ground balls and three caused turnovers in her collegiate debut. Tina Tu added five ground balls.
Pfundstein racked up six goals, one assist, five draw controls, and three ground balls for the Privateers. Krista Deleva posted a game-high 11 points with five goals and six assists. Sara Wright had a hat trick to go along with 11 draw controls.
In her first collegiate contest as a goalie, Bryn Athyn's Sarah Smith made eight saves. SUNY Maritime's Esmeralda Hernandez stopped six shots. SUNY Maritime outshot Bryn Athyn, 36-18.
Bryn Athyn returns to action on Sunday, March 17 with a non-conference game against Sweet Briar on at noon on General Nelson Field.
