CLARKS SUMMIT, Pa. – Shebly Puccio's (Southampton, Pa./William Tennett) assault on opposing defenses continued Saturday afternoon as the sophomore forward victimized the Clarks Summit University for three goals as the Bryn Athyn College women's soccer team defeated the host Defenders 5-1.
Through three games in 2017, Puccio has already found the back of the net eight times, surpassing her career-high and school record of seven which came last year. She now has two hat-tricks in the season's opening nine days.
In addition to Puccio's three goals, the Bryn Athyn (3-0-0) offense received a strong contribution from Rose Glass (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington), who notched her second-career two-goal game.
Puccio gave the Lions a 2-0 lead with a pair of goals during the first 17 minutes. At the 8:21 mark, Puccio gathered the rebound of a Glass shot and deposited the ball into an open net. She doubled the Bryn Athyn just under eight minutes later as she headed home a Kristen White (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) corner kick.
Glass got into the scoring act at the 34:24 mark by dribbling around Defender keeper Heidi Butterbaugh. The lead grew to 4-0 1:34 later as Glass made a strong run down the left wing and hit the right side of the net with her shot.
Puccio completed the hat-trick by tucking a shot inside the right post after breaking free on the right wing at 48:11.
Clarks Summit (0-3) got a goal back at 75:15 when Stewart Simone took a through ball from Emily Howell and put the ball into the net. It was the first goal allowed by Bryn Athyn this season.
Despite giving up the late goal, Bryn Athyn keeper Allie Warren (Tower City, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) turned in another solid performance, stopping nine shots—tying a season high. Butterbaugh recorded 13 saves during a busy day in goal.
Bryn Athyn returns home to face New Jersey City University in a non-conference match Wednesday, Sept. 13 at 7 p.m.
