Women's soccer falls to NJCU, 3-2

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College women's soccer team was handed its first loss of the season after visiting New Jersey City University scored twice in the final 13 minutes to defeat the Lions 3-2 Wednesday night on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.

With the match tied at one, Lion forward Rose Glass (Philadelphia, Pa./George Washington) scored her second goal of 2017 at the 63:04 mark to put Bryn Athyn up 2-1. Gothic Knight keeper Dominique Jackson came charging out of her net to take the ball off the foot of Shelby Puccio (Southampton, Pa./William Tennett), who was one-on-one against the keeper. The ball bounced off Jackson directly to Glass on the left wing and gave Glass a wide-open net.

Then, New Jersey City's Mallensy Vargas—who scored all three Gothic Knight goals—took the match over. Vargas evened the match at two as she dribbled away from a Lion double team and fired off a right-footed shot from just outside the penalty area and found the back of the net at 77:38. She completed the hat-trick with just 1:28 left in the match by scoring on the same exact play that earned the equalizer.

Bryn Athyn keeper Allie Warren (Tower City, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) had a strong game in defeat as she recorded a career-high 14 saves. Jackson ended the night with three saves for the Gothic Knights (2-4-0)

Kristen White (Voorhees, N.J./Eastern) put Bryn Athyn in front 1-0 at the 16:02 mark with her second goal of the season. White lofted a free kick from 30 yards out on target. Jackson reached up to catch the ball but had it slip through her fingers and sneak inside the left post.

The game remained 1-0 until Vargas scored her first goal of the match just over six minutes into the second half.

Bryn Athyn (3-1-0) will wrap up non-conference play on Saturday, Sept. 16 against SUNY Old Westbury on General Nelson Field at 4 p.m.
