BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Alexis Juritsch and Hannah Dewees combined for 22 kills as the Bryn Athyn College women's volleyball team got in the win column for the first time in 2017 with a 3-0 (25-22, 25-20, 25-23) triumph over Cairn University Tuesday night in Asplundh Field House.
Juritsch posted her second career double-double, first of the season, as she racked up 11 kills—tying a career high—and a match-high 15 digs. She had a career-best .345 attack percentage.
Dewees filled up the box score with 11 kills—giving her double-digit kills in back-to-back matches—seven assists, and a season-high nine digs.
As a team, the Lions had season-highs in kills (36), attack percentage (.167), service aces (14), assists (35), and digs (52).
Bryn Athyn had to overcome a 16-7 deficit to rally and win the opening set. Lydia Langlotz sparked a 14-5 surge that would allow the Lions to even the set at 21 with one of her three kills. During the run, Juritsch had three kills and one service ace, while Clayshona Cogmon and Dewees had two kills each. After a service error put Cairn up 22-21, the Lions ran off the final four points, capped by Dewees' third kill of the set, to complete the comeback. The Lions hit a season-high .229 during the first set.
The Lions never trailed in the second set and led by as many as eight points (18-10). It wasn't all smooth sailing for Bryn Athyn as Cairn scored six straight points to narrow the gap to 18-16. With Bryn Athyn leading 20-18, Dewees stabilized the set by recording a kill and an ace on consecutive points to put the Lions up four.
Bryn Athyn had to rally again in the third after Cairn put together a 9-2 run to open up a 17-12 advantage. Juritsch's 10th kill of the match started a 10-2 surge that put the Lions back in control 22-19. Dewees led the run with three kills. After Cairn fought back to tie the set at 22, the Highlanders committed back-to-back errors to give the Lions match point. On their second match point, Juritsch slammed down her 11th kill of the day to secure the win.
Amber Wood tailed a career-high 22 assists, eight digs, and five kills. Langlotz finished up with three kills, three aces, and 10 digs.
Haley Sheehan paced Cairn with eight kills and 12 digs, while Bri Norton had seven kills.
Bryn Athyn (1-9) returns to North Eastern Athletic Conference play against visiting Gallaudet on Saturday, Sept. 23 at 11 a.m.
