Volleyball drops both matches at New Jersey City University tri-match

JERSEY CITY, N.J. – The Bryn Athyn College women's volleyball team went 0-2 in its first two matches of the season at the New Jersey City University tri-match on Saturday. The Lions fell to host New Jersey City, 3-1, and Farmingdale State, 3-0.

Hannah Dewees, Lex Juritsch, and Jenessa Lombardi had strong efforts in the opener against New Jersey City.

Dewees recorded a match-high 14 kills and a .238 hitting percentage. It the 15th time in Dewees' career that she had a double-figure kill total. Juritsch posted her fourth career double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs. Lombardi had a match-best 36 assists and 12 digs for her eighth double-double in her career.

After dropping the first set 25-21, Bryn Athyn put together a dominant second set as the Lions outhit New Jersey City .269 to -.061 to win the set 25-17. The Gothic Knights came back to record 14 kills and a .346 hitting percentage to claim the third set 25-18. New Jersey City claimed the match with a 25-22 set four win.

Xarial Chandler (13 kills, 20 digs), Yaldettive Vega (11 kills, 13 digs), and Katrina Nguyendon (35 assists, 11 digs) all had double-doubles for the Gothic Knights.

In the second match of the day, Farmingdale State earned the sweep with set scores of 25-15, 25-18, and 25-20.

Juritsch was the Lions' offensive leader with six kills, while Dewees added four. Chloe Levan paced the team with 13 digs.

Kate Flamio had 12 kills and 11 digs to lead Farmingdale State. Rachel McCartin racked up nine kills, seven digs, and five service aces.

Bryn Athyn will play in front of its home fans for the first time this season when the Lions play host to Penn State Schuylkill on Tuesday, Sept. 3 at 7 p.m.
