BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Brittany Gunther scored her first goal of the 2019 season for the Bryn Athyn College field hockey team in a 2-1 loss to Sweet Briar College Sunday afternoon on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.
Gunther put the Lions on the board with her fourth career goal 4:51 into the first quarter. On a penalty corner play, Chantal Farmer had the ball on the right wing and threw a pass into the goal area. Gunther was able to get her stick on the ball and redirect it into the Sweet Briar cage.
Kailey Brower made two saves of her four first-quarter saves after Gunther's goal to give the Lions ahead after 15 minutes of play.
Sweet Briar broke through with the equalizer 2:22 into the second quarter. Brower stopped two shots before Rae Rae Dillion ended up with the ball on the right side of the net. Dillion was able to sneak the ball past Brower from a tight angle to make the score 1-1.
Alexis Jones gave the Vixen (1-4) a 2-1 lead with 3:17 left in the quarter with a shot from the right wing that got by the left pad of Brower.
Brower finished the contest with 13 saves, while Rosemary Austin and Janie Bolling combined to stop 10 shots for Sweet Briar. Austin started the game and made six saves in 46:57, while Bolling played the rest of the fourth quarter and recorded four saves.
Bryn Athyn (0-4) now has a week off to prepare for its next contest, coming on Monday, Sept. 23 at Wilkes at 7 p.m.
