Taylor, Louchie lead offensive onslaught as men's basketball knocks off Valley Forge

PHOENIXVILLE, Pa. – Okoye Taylor and Haybert Louchie both had career days in scoring with 23 and 21 points, respectively to power the Bryn Athyn College men's basketball team to a 101-91 victory over the University of Valley Forge in the Lions' final non-conference game of the season Saturday afternoon.

Taylor surpassed his previous career-best of 18 points, which came nearly two years ago on Jan. 5, 2018, by shooting 8-of-19 from the field, including a career-high five 3-pointers. Louchie shot 9-of-16 from the floor to better his old career-high of 17 that came in the Lions' last outing against Juniata. In addition to his 21 points, Louchie added eight assists, six rebounds, and two steals.

Anthony Burr recorded his first collegiate double-double by racking up a season-high 19 points and 10 rebounds. Dante Lanzetta scored 11 points, while Joe Morici poured in 10 points.

The Lions had their best offensive performance of the season by scoring the 101 points and shooting 54.9 percent (39-of-71) from the field, both are season highs. It was the third time in program history that the Lions eclipsed the century mark, the second time in regulation. The last time Bryn Athyn scored 100+ points in a game was on Nov. 28, 2018 in a 105-99 overtime win over Immaculata. The only other time Bryn Athyn reached 100 in 40 minutes came on Dec. 3, 2016 when the Lions put up a program-record 111 points in a 26-point win over Penn College.

Bryn Athyn found itself down by a game-high 14 points (47-33) with 4:28 left in the first half. The Lions began to heat up going into the locker room, making five of their final seven shots of the half to close the gap to 50-46 at the break. Louchie led the charge with five points, while Burr chipped in four. On the other end of the floor, the Patriots missed their final six shots and turned the ball over three times.

Halftime couldn't cool off the Lions as Burr and Taylor each knocked down a 3-pointer in the opening 90 seconds of the second half to give Bryn Athyn a 52-50 advantage. The two teams would then go back-and-forth swapping the lead with the final lead change of the game coming when Taylor drilled another 3-pointer at the 16:28 mark to make the score 60-58 in favor of the Lions.

Even though the Lions wouldn't trail the rest of the way didn't mean it was easy for them. Valley Forge (5-4) went on a 10-2 run to erase an eight-point Bryn Athyn lead (80-72) to level the score at 82 with 6:19 remaining. Lanzetta and Burr hit 3-pointers on back-to-back Bryn Athyn possessions to but the Lions ahead by six (88-82) with 4:29 left to play. The Lion lead reached a game-high 11 points (100-89) when Burr made two free throws with 65 seconds on the clock.

Valley Forge had three players score at least 20 points, led by Derian Bradford's 25 points. Owen Bradford had 22 points and 13 rebounds and Aaron Hill added 20 points.

Bryn Athyn (1-13) faces Wilson in a Colonial States Athletic Conference game on Tuesday, Jan. 7 at 8 p.m. in Asplundh Field House.
