WLIKES-BARRE, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College men's ice hockey team closed out 2019 with a 5-3 loss to Wilkes, who is receiving votes in the USCHO Division III Men's Poll, in the Toyota Sportsplex Tuesday night.
Devon Becker, Nikita Smirnov, and Dakota Ulmer all scored for the Lions (6-4-2). Becker and Sheldon Brett, who tallied an assist in the contest, both extended their respective point streaks to three games.
Donald Flynn paced Wilkes (10-2-0) with a hat-trick, while Ben Stefanini and Phil Erickson also scored.
After Flynn opened the scoring with the first of two Wilkes power-play goals, Smirnov leveled the score at one with an even-strength goal, assisted by Tanner Congdon, at the 9:39 mark. Becker put Bryn Athyn in the lead with a power-play goal at 14:32. Cameron Shorrock and Brett each picked up an assist on Becker's team-leading seventh goal of the season. Bryn Athyn outshot Wilkes 16-7 in the first period.
Wilkes took control of the contest in the second period, scoring three times to take a 4-2 advantage after 40 minutes. Ben Stefanini recorded the first goal of the period and was followed up by the final two of Flynn's three goals, the final one coming on the power play.
Ulmer's second goal of the season, coming 2:36 into the third period, pulled the Lions within 4-3. The goal was assisted by Shorrock and Alec Grollman.
Phil Erickson sealed the game by scoring with 9:06 left in the contest.
McKenzie Chalmers recorded 29 saves for the Lions, 19 in the final period. Michael Paterson-Jones came up with 27 stops.
Bryn Athyn is off until Saturday, Jan. 4 when it takes on Nichols in the first round of the Boston Landing Tournament at 6 p.m. in the Warrior Ice Arena in Boston.
