Women's basketball tripped up at Penn State Abington
ABINGTON, Pa. -- The Bryn Athyn College women's basketball team suffered a 68-48 road loss to North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) Penn State Abington Wednesday night.
Shaneika Smith was Bryn Athyn's leading scorer with 15 points in 31 minutes of action. Zeniyah Sanders grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds to go along with seven points.
Sanders gave the Lions (4-9, 1-3 NEAC) an early 3-2 advantage with a jumper and free throw 1:20 into the contest. Then, Penn State Abington (8-4, 3-1 NEAC) ran off six straight points to claim a five-point lead at the 5:34 mark of the first quarter. The Nittany Lions extended the margin to 15-7 on a pair of Grace Dewey free throws with 1:58 left in the first.
With the Nittany Lions up 17-11, the Lions would score eight of the next 12 points to trim their deficit to 21-19 on a Smith jumper. Penn State Abington answered back with a 14-6 run to take their first double-digit lead of the game, 35-25, with 1:46 remaining before halftime.
Bryn Athyn chipped away at the Penn State Abington advantage in the third quarter, getting at close as four points (42-38) on an Allie Warren 3-pointer at the 4:27 mark of the quarter. It would be as close as the Lions would get because the Nittany Lions ended the game outscoring Bryn Athyn 26-10, including a 15-1 run at the start of the fourth quarter.
Symantha Marrero paced Penn State Abington with a game-high 23 points. Shayna Rodriguez added 22 points and 10 rebounds.
Bryn Athyn returns to Asplundh Field House on Saturday, Jan. 13 to face SUNY Poly in a NEAC contest at 3 p.m.
