BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College women's soccer team made its Colonial States Athletic Conference debut Saturday afternoon on General Ronald K. Nelson Field against a very familiar opponent, Wilson College. The Lions scored twice and then held on to win the battle of teams that left the North Eastern Athletic Conference for the CSAC, 2-1.
Shelby Puccio opened the scoring with her fifth goal of the season at the 13:36 mark to give Bryn Athyn (3-3-1, 1-0-0 CSAC) a 1-0 lead. Puccio was standing to the left side of the penalty spot when a bouncing ball, that ricocheted off two Wilson defenders, and drilled it into the back of the net.
The Lion advantage doubled to two just 3:12 after halftime when Bryn Athyn was awarded a penalty kick for a Wilson handball in the penalty area. Ashley Rivera stepped up and calmly put the ball into the upper right corner of the goal for her fourth goal of the season.
Wilson (3-4-0, 1-1-0 CSAC) was given a brief lifeline when Bryn Athyn defender Shauna Breen tripped a Phoenix just inside the penalty box with 5:20 left in the contest. Noemi Regan scored on her penalty attempt to cut the Bryn Athyn lead to 2-1.
The Lion defense was able to hold off the Phoenix attack in the final five minutes to close out the win.
Allie Warren was the winning goalkeeper as she stopped five shots to improve to 3-3-1. Aubrey Runkle had eight saves for Wilson.
The Lions owned advantages in shots, 18-6, and corner kicks, 10-1.
Bryn Athyn goes back on the road to take on Cedar Crest in a CSAC showdown on Tuesday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.
