Box Score Bryn Athyn, Pa. - The Bryn Athyn Lions looked sharp in their first win of the season with a 7-0 win over Williamson College on a humid afternoon. Looking to rebound after a tough road loss over the weekend, Bryn Athyn played some of its soccer from the start, chasing down every ball and calmly maintaining possession, ensuring that Williamson would have to work especially hard to achieve any success.
The Lions jumped right out of the gate with quick shots from Greg Synnestvedt and Slava Tikhonov that tested Williamson's keeper early, and in the 21st minute Tikhonov opened the scoring with a quick footed run on the left side of the box, beating his man and sliding the ball past the keeper from a sharp angle. Bryn Athyn continued to apply heavy pressure and only four minutes later Alexander Pafford found Santiago Tabares with an astute through ball, Tabares calmly finishing for a 2-0 lead. Two was not enough for the home team, and in the 38th minute mark Tikhonov added to his tally after a defense splitting pass from Joel Borketey.
Not content with their lead at halftime, the Lions roared out of the gate in the second half and Tabares brought the crowd to its feet with an astounding chip from outside the box that left the goalie grasping at air as the ball drifted into the far corner. Tikhonov completed his hat trick in the 53rd minute with a powerful shot from outside the box into the bottom left corner, and from then on a positive result seemed almost certain. Bryn Athyn showed off their passing ability for the next 20 minutes as Williamson tired under humid conditions, and were rewarded for their patience with the ball in the 81st minute when Synnestvedt powered in a header from close range. It would prove to be 7th heaven for the Lions as David Hyam rounded off a beautiful passing play between Ian Crowther and Ben Useche with an audacious backheel past the goalie, and with that the Lions achieved their first victory of the year, leaving the team confident and excited for the games to come.
Johnny Walker was solid throughout the game, tallying 9 saves in his shutout, and a defensive backline of captain Michael Redondo, Ian Crowther, Joshua Alden and Nelson Lopez tidied up anything Johnny wasn't able to handle.
The Lions host Christendom at home on Saturday at 2:00 pm.
