Men's Soccer Drops Short at Gwynedd-Mercy

Box Score

Gwynedd, Pa.- The Bryn Athyn Lions fell today against Gwynedd-Mercy despite a spirited performance that the final score did not accurately reflect.

Finding themselves down two goals halfway through the first half, the Lions dug their heels in and produced some of their best soccer all season. Nelson Lopez switched the play to the right side of the field with a perfectly weighted ball for Santiago Tabares to collect. Tabares beat his man down the wing and cut the ball back to Alexander Pafford at the top of the box, who returned it to Tabares for a quick one-two that left the Gwynedd Mercy defense grasping at air. With Pafford through on goal with just the keeper to beat, he made no mistake guiding the ball into the far left corner where it rang off the post into the goal.

Buoyed by the narrow scoreline, the Lions came roaring out of the gate in the second half and continued to pressure their opponents, finding consistent success working the ball up the right to Tabares. It was Tabares' work on the wing that led to another quality chance. Pafford found Greg Synnestvedt at the top of the box who one touched it into the path of Nelson Lopez. Not much later Gwynedd-Mercy made it 3-1 and Bryn Athyn was not able to recover. One more chance came off a Pafford free kick that Synnestvedt headed across goal, just missing his fellow attackers. Gwynedd-Mercy added a late fourth goal, but the Lions left the field with their heads held high, knowing that with a few breaks the game might have had a more favorable result.

The Lions return to the road Tuesday, September 24th to face Moravian. The game is set for 4:00pm.
