Box Score Aurora, NY- Bryn Athyn College men's soccer traveled to Central New York, Saturday to take on conference opponent Wells College. Bryn Athyn is coming off a 4-0 win over Williamson on Thursday.
The Lions and the Express traded shots in the first minute. Bryn Athyn seemed to have taken the lead on a cross from David Camara at the third minute mark , when Usufu Johnson punched home a loose ball. But the referees called the goal back stating the goalie had possession.
The teams traded back and forth play for the first 15 minutes of the game. The gritty defensive line of Kyle Goldbloom, Anthony D'Amico, Joel Borketey, and Michael Redondo kept Wells chances to a minimum.
Siafa Dempter crossed the ball from the left side of the Wells penalty box at the 20 minute mark, which Usufu Johnson connected with a header on goal for a Wells save.
The Lions looked to capitalize before half when Jayson Marbach took the ball down the left side and passed to Dempster. He cut back and sent a shot to the far post only to be saved by the Wells goalie.
At the 41st minute, Wells had a direct kick outside the 18, but shot flew over the goal.
The Lions had yet another chance to capitalize before half, with a direct kick from 40 yards out, but couldn't get contact on the ball.
The teams went into the half 0-0.
Bryn Athyn started off the second half with a strong defensive play by Borketey and Goldbloom. The combo kept the Express shots to the outside.
Lions looked to get on the board at the 50th minute when Jacob Dillon played a ball intended for Johnson on the 18 yard line, only to have it intercepted by the Wells keeper.
Express picked up the intensity 10 minutes into the half, as they put multiple balls towards to the Bryn Athyn goal, but couldn't connect with the cage.
Wells College player headed a cross to the 18 to put the Express up 1-0 with 30 minutes to play.
Dempster placed a direct kick into the Wells box at the 65th minute, the Lions had multiple touches on the ball, but couldn't put one home.
Wells would look to extend their lead at the 66th minute on a breakaway, but Ryan Weinkopff cut down the angle to force the shot wide. The match stayed at 1-0 Wells.
Express would continue the pressure, placing a shot off the post at the 69th minute. The Lions would continue to play stellar defense, lead by Michael Redondo.
The Lions would make a run at the 80th minute, when Dempster took the ball down the left side of the Wells goal. The Wells defense collapsed on Dempster and took away the scoring chance.
Dillon placed a corner with right minutes remaining into the box, only to be cut off by the Wells goalie.
Bryn Athyn was given a direct kick with four minutes remaining, which was defected out of bounds by the Wells wall. Jake Dillon placed a perfect corner into the box, which Johnson connected just wide of the goal.
Wells would hold onto the lead and win the game 1-0.
The Lions return to action tomorrow when they play Keuka College.
