Late goal sinks men's soccer in loss to Penn State Berks

Box Score

READING, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College men's soccer team surrendered a goal just 14 seconds away from the end of regulation to suffer a heart-breaking 2-1 North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) loss to Penn State Berks Thursday afternoon.

Cole Mays scored the match-winning goal after receiving a through ball from Manny Zavala. Mays sprinted past the Lions defense and beat emergency keeper AJ Clark—who was called into action after started Quentin Hager was red-carded at 70:04—in the upper left corner.

Mays and Zavala connected at the 27:08 mark to put the Nittany Lions (8-8-1, 6-2-1 NEAC) ahead 1-0. Zavala played a cross into the box that Mays volleyed into the goal.

Matheus Souza pulled the Lions (5-10-0, 2-8-0 NEAC) level with 3:59 left in the opening half on a David Camara cross. The goal was Souza's third of 2017.

Before being sent off, Hager made eight saves for the Lions. Clark stopped three shots in a relief effort. Berks split time in goal between Gerardo Sosa and Trent Johnson. Sosa recorded two saves during the first half, while Johnson was credited with the win and three saves.

Berks outshot Bryn Athyn 21-13.

Bryn Athyn heads to Gwynedd Mercy University for a non-conference game to close out the 2017 season on Saturday, Oct. 28 at noon.
