Chaves, Lions surge by College of Saint Elizabeth for 5-1 victory

Box Score

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Matheus Chaves became the sixth player in Bryn Athyn College men's soccer history to record a hat-trick as the Lions earned their first win of 2019, 5-1 over the College of Saint Elizabeth in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match Tuesday night on General Ronald K. Nelson Field.

Chaves scored all three of his goals, his first three of the season, in the second half to widen the 2-1 lead that Bryn Athyn carried over from the first 45 minutes of play. It was the seventh hat-trick in Lions history, the first since Matheus Souza scored three times in a 5-1 win over Penn State Lehigh Valley on September 13, 2018.

Chaves' memorable second half began at the 51:01 when Owen Ovecka set Chaves free with a perfect through ball around two Eagle defenders. Chaves tracked the pass down and chipped the ball over a diving Mauricio Herrera to extend the Bryn Athyn to 3-1.

Nine minutes later, Chaves struck again with Bryn Athyn's fourth straight goal. Chaves received a pass at the left corner of the penalty area from Zachary Brock, who danced through multiple Eagle defenders to get into space to make the pass. After taking a big touch, Chaves rocketed a shot just under the crossbar and into the net.

Chaves completed the hat-trick by putting the rebound of an Aaron Clark shot from point-blank range into a vacant goal with 22:48 left in the contest.

The College of Saint Elizabeth (2-11-1, 0-4-0 CSAC) took the lead 5:04 after the opening whistle against the run of play. Miguel Aristizabal lofted a high-arching shot from just past the center circle that caught Bryn Athyn keeper Michael Haas well off his line and bounced into the goal.

Bryn Athyn bounced back nicely by cashing in on a pair of corner kicks to erase the deficit and go in front 2-1. Joe Nugent leveled the score at one at 14:55 when he got his head to a Chaves corner kick at the far post, redirecting it past a frozen Herrera. Pete Comas put Bryn Athyn in front, heading home a Justin Delgado corner at the 32:31 mark.

Haas put the early goal behind him and ended up stopping six shots to record his first collegiate win. Herrera had four saves for Saint Elizabeth.

Bryn Athyn (1-13-0, 1-4-0 CSAC) plays its final home game of the regular season when the Lions host Rosemont on Saturday, Oct. 19 at 3 p.m. The Lions will recognize seniors Zachary Brock and Chris Mitchell before the contest.
