The 2020 season will mark the fourth season at the helm of the Bryn Athyn College field hockey team for Katie Fitzgerald, who was selected as the program’s first head coach in the summer of 2016. In addition to her head coaching role, Fitzgerald is also the College's Senior Woman Administrator and Student-Athlete Advisory Committee advisor.
The 2019 campaign was highlighted by three selections to the All-Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) team—led by first-team midfielder Eve Miller. Bryn Athyn led Division III with 1.86 defensive saves per game. Katherine Halle was tops in the CSAC with 12 defensive saves and 0.86 defensive saves per game. The Lions finished the season fourth in Division III with a CSAC-leading 26 defensive saves. Bryn Athyn had 10 players earn a spot on the CSAC Fall All-Academic Team.
Bryn Athyn won twice in 2018, including its first-ever CSAC victory against the College of Notre Dame (Md.) on Oct. 10 by a 3-1 score. Bryn Athyn had a program-record four players named to an all-conference team with Chantal Farmer, Bri Lennox, Eve Miller, and Kyla Rogers all earning a spot on the All-CSAC second team. Six Lions were tabbed for the CSAC Fall All-Academic Team.
In the program's inaugural season of 2017, the Lions picked up a pair of victories--with the first one coming on Sept. 16, 2017 thanks to a 10-0 triumph over the College of Notre Dame (Md.). Payton Boler became the program’s first-ever all-conference selection after her 11-goal season, which was second in the North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC), earned her a place on the All-NEAC team. In the classroom, six Lions were tabbed NEAC Scholar-Athletes for having a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.40.
Before accepting her first head coaching position, Fitzgerald spent three seasons as an assistant at Arcadia University. She was responsible for the crafting game and practice plans and evaluated potential recruits. The Knights had a 37-26 overall record and reached the Middle Atlantic Conference Tournament in 2013 and 2014. During the 2014 season, Arcadia made it to the final of the ECAC Tournament.
Fitzgerald was a graduate assistant coach for two years while earning her master’s degree in teaching English to speakers of other languages at Wilkes University. The Colonels won 20 games in those two seasons and made the 2009 Freedom Conference Tournament.
She started her coaching career in 2009 as a coach of the Valley Styx U-19 and U-16 club members.
Fitzgerald is a 2009 graduate of Towson University with a degree in family studies and community development. She played in 62 games as a back for the Tigers field hockey program and was a three-time recipient of the Colonial Athletic Association Commissioner’s Academic Award.
Fitzgerald resides in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. with her husband, Mike, and daughters, Lennon and Hartley.
