Andrew Burke is going into his ninth season at the men’s ice hockey head coach at Bryn Athyn College in 2020-21. In his first five seasons, Burke ran a highly-successful club program and has been responsible for the Lions’ successful transition into NCAA Division III.

Since making the jump to Division III in 2017-18, Burke led the Lions to a 28-39-4 record.

Last season was Bryn Athyn’s best season in the NCAA as Bryn Athyn went 12-10-3. The team finished the year 32nd in Division III with 3.24 goals per game. In 2018-19, Bryn Athyn posted a 7-17-0 record. The Lions' first year as a NCAA program saw the Lions go 9-12-1. Bryn Athyn had the 16th best power play in Division III, scoring on 22.8 percent (26-of-114) of its man advantages, and ranking 36th with 3.05 goals per game.

As a club team, Bryn Athyn posted a 115-34-2 overall record in the five years under Burke and made lots of noise on the national stage with trips to the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) semifinals in 2015 and 2017.

Burke experienced success with the Lions right off the bat as Bryn Athyn went 17-11-0 during the 2012-13 season and won the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Conference (DVCHC) American Central Division Championship.

In 2013-14, the Lions went 21-12-0 overall and reached the final of the DVCHC National Division Tournament. Scott Witmyer was tabbed as the DVCHC Player of the Year and was named to the ACHA All-Atlantic Region first team. Terrence Johnson, Travis McCurdy, Ben Silvers, Sean Feyler, Graham Lermitte, and Witmyer all earned a spot on the DVCHC European Select Team.

Bryn Athyn made tremendous strides in the 2014-15 season, going 27-3-1 overall, winning the DVCHC National Division Title, earning a trip to the ACHA Championship Tournament for the first time in program history, and finishing the season ranked first in the Atlantic Region and third in the ACHA national rankings. The Lions made the most of their first appearance on the national stage as Bryn Athyn reached the semifinals of the ACHA Tournament. The team’s success resulted in Burke being named the DVCHC Coach of the Year. Jayson Marbach, Anthony Notorfrancesco, Kyle Waters, Witmyer, and Johnson were all named DVCHC All-Stars. Witmyer and Johnson went on to represent Bryn Athyn on the ACHA All-Atlantic Region Team.

The Lions’ success continued in 2015-16 with Bryn Athyn racking up 30 wins, winning its second straight DVCHC National Division crown, going to the ACHA Championship Tournament quarterfinals, and ending the year fifth in the final ACHA national rankings. Five Lions were All-Atlantic Region selections: Jayson Marbach (first team), Anthony Astorino (first team), Paul Napierkowski (second team), Kyle Jennings (second team), and Steve Altman (second team) Marbach—who finished tied for third in the country in points with 91 and led the country in power-play assists—was also tabbed the DVCHC Player of the Year.

In the Lions’ final season as a club team, Bryn Athyn went 26-3-0 overall, won its third consecutive DVCHC National Division championship, and returned to the ACHA Championship Tournament semifinals for the second time in three years. Bryn Athyn had four players named to the ACHA All-Atlantic Region Team, led by Marbach earned the region’s player of the year award. He was joined on the team by Anthony Carbone (first team), Notorfrancesco (second team), Isaac Syre (second team), Vojtech Luza (third team), and Anthony Astorino (third team).

A 2006 high school graduate of Archbishop Ryan, Burke went on to play club hockey for the Philadelphia Little Flyers for two seasons and his collegiate hockey at Division III UMass-Boston, where he graduated in 2012 with a bachelor’s in information systems. He had 28 goals and 45 assists in 128 games and was a two-time Atlantic Junior Hockey League All-Star as a member of the Junior Flyers. At UMass-Boston, Burke racked up 50 points (17 goals, 33 assists) in 74 career games. Burke had a solid senior season as he tallied eight goals and 11 assists in 23 games. He was also strong in the classroom at UMass-Boston, earning a place on the Dean’s List and ECAC All-Academic Team every year.
