Box Score 2 Cazenovia, NY. - The Bryn Athyn College women's volleyball fell 3-1 to Curry College in the first day of the Blue and Gold Classic at Cazenovia College.
The Lions opened the season on the road at Cazenovia College. Cathleen Curran led the Lions with 34 digs. Kaitlyn Brock notched 12 digs and 13 kills, while Cree Gurney added 10 kills. Kelsey Kowalick recorded 12 digs and Alexus Kolb registered 14 digs. Catherine Kirk dished out 19 assists.
Both teams exchanged points to 10-10 lead by Cree Gurney and Kaitlyn Brock in the first set. Colonels took a took 5-0 lead to 15-10, but Gurney served her way to cut the gap to within two points. The Lions kept on the pressure to keep the game within two points to 23-21. Coach Kozar took a timeout to slow Currys momentum, but the Colonels took the first set 25-22.
Game two, Bryn Athyn jumped out to a 7-3 lead, with the Lions defense leading the way. But the Colonels came back to tie the game at 8-8. Taylor Davis lead the defense with four straight points at the net to lift the Lions 12-9. Curry came back to take the lead with six straight points, before Brock killed a ball to stop the Curry momentum.
Cathleen Curran served the Lions to 20-16, forcing Curry to take a timeout to the slow Bryn Athyn momentum. Two unforced errors allowed Curry back in the game to within three points. Gurney served to close the game and tie the match at 1-1.
Colonels jumped to a 7-2 lead with a strong offense at the net in game three. Curry kept on the pressure and extended their lead to 12-3. Catherine Kirk's serving helped chipped away at the Colonels, to bring the Lions within seven. Bryn Athyn kept on the pressure, but the Colonels took the third set to take a 2-1 lead.
Curry took a 5-0 lead to start the fourth game. Gurney scored three points of kills to cut the defiect down to two. Holly Adams and Eden Zecher added two quick points to keep the Lions close. Bryn Athyn wouldn't let down the pressure wth the offense firing on all clyinders. But the Colonels came out with the fourth set and won the match 3-1.
The Lions will play 2012 NCAA tournament qualifier Skidmore College at 7:00 pm.
