Women's volleyball falls twice in NEAC quad match

MORRISTOWN, N.J. – The Bryn Athyn College women's volleyball team suffered a pair of 3-0 North Eastern Athletic Conference losses to Penn College and Cazenovia Saturday afternoon at the College of St. Elizabeth.

In the opening match, the Lions were defeated by Penn College in a tightly-contested three-set match 25-20, 25-21, 25-20. Alexis Juritsch had a strong match for Bryn Athyn as she posted nine kills and 16 digs, both team highs. Hannah Dewees added six kills and 15 digs, while Anja Weisser recorded seven kills.

Bryn Athyn owned an early 4-2 lead in set one, but Penn College went on a 12-5 run to open up a 14-9 advantage. After the Wildcats widen the gap to 22-14, the Lions ran off six of the next seven points to close within 23-20.

The Lions dominated the early stages of set two, jumping out to a 14-8 lead. Then, Penn College took over and went on a 15-2 run to move ahead by seven (23-16). Bryn Athyn scored five straight points to get back in the set, but Penn College held on by getting the last two.

With the final set tied at 10, the Wildcats slowed pulled away and took a 19-14 lead. Bryn Athyn fought back to trim the gap to 22-20. However, the Lions committed errors on two of the Wildcats final three points.

Felicia Webber had 10 kills and 10 digs for Penn College (3-12, 2-5 NEAC).

Against Cazenovia (4-19, 2-5 NEAC), the Lions were knocked off by scores of 25-19, 25-19, 25-18. Amber Wood recorded her first double-double of the season with 15 assists and 11 digs. Dewees tallied seven kills, while Juritsch racked up 21 digs, the most by a Lion this season.

In set one, Bryn Athyn led by three points, 12-9. Then, Cazenvoia used a 6-1 run to move in front 15-13. The Lions came back to tie the set at 15, but the Wildcats took control of the set, closing it out with a 10-4 run.

Like the opening set, the Lions controlled the early stages of set two, leading by as many as three points. Cazenovia once against answered back, this time using a 12-4 surge to go from down one to up 23-16.

Cazenovia closed out the match thanks to a late 7-1 run that put them ahead 20-13.

Ashley Anastas had eight kills and 10 digs for the Wildcats, while Grace Torino added 20 assists and 13 digs.

Bryn Athyn (1-16, 0-8 NEAC) will play its final home match of the season on Thursday, Oct. 19 against the University of Valley Forge at 7 p.m. in Asplundh Field House.
