Volleyball notches first win of season with 3-0 win over Penn State Schuylkill

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Led by a match-high 10 kills from Hannah Dewees, the Bryn Athyn College women's volleyball team picked up its first win of the season, 3-0 (25-18, 25-17, 25-19) over Penn State Schuylkill Tuesday night in Asplundh Field House.

Lex Juritsch and Allaina Brock each had six kills, while Chloe Levan added six service aces and eight digs—both match highs.

Bryn Athyn (1-2) got off to a slow start in the opening set and found itself down 7-4. With the help of six Penn State Schuylkill (0-2) errors and aces from Levan, Juritsch, and Briana Cliney, Bryn Athyn went on a 12-3 to open up a 16-10 advantage. A run of three straight points later in the set, capped off by a Levan ace, widen the gap to a set-high eight points (22-14).

The Lions had a dominating second set as they recorded 17 kills, paced by five from Dewess and four from Brock, and only one error. The 17 kills tied the program record for the most kills in a single set. After a closely contested beginning to the set, Bryn Athyn ran off four straight points—bookended by kills from Alexis Nakos and Juritsch—to open up a 10-5 lead. With the lead sitting at 15-12, a Nakos kills started a run of three straight points to move ahead 18-12. Penn State Schuylkill wouldn't get closer than four points the rest of the way.

Bryn Athyn's success at the service line propelled the Lions to the sweep as they served up eight aces. Levan recorded all four of her third-set aces on the back end of a 7-1 run to begin the set. Three consecutive aces from Dewees extended the Bryn Athyn lead to 12-4. After the Nittany Lions trimmed the gap to 15-10, the Lions ran off five straight points to take a match-high 20-10 lead on a Clayshonia Cogmon kill. Penn State Schuykill put together a late rally to close within 22-19, but Bryn Athyn closed out the match with a Brock kill and two Nittany Lion attack errors.

The Lions finished the match with 15 service aces, while the Nittany Lions had only six. Bryn Athyn also had an advantage in hitting percentage, .284 to .151.

Chloe Readinger and Noel Kaufmann led Penn State Schuykill with six kills. Kaufmann also paced the team with eight digs.

Bryn Athyn doesn't have long to enjoy the win because the team returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 4 with a 7 p.m. match at Arcadia.
