Jason Barshinger was named the second head coach in Bryn Athyn College men’s volleyball history in August 2022.
In addition to his duties as head coach of men’s volleyball, Barshinger is involved on campus as an Academic Advisor, Residence Life Coordinator, College Store Manager, and the Event Planner for Admissions.
The 2024-25 season will mark the third year that Barshinger is leading the Lions volleyball team. Taking over in the second year of the program, Barshinger helped guide the team from a 3 win season in 2022-23 to a 12 win mark in 2023-24. During that campaign, the Lions saw significant growth, tallied their longest win streak in program history (4), and freshman Bryan Choute was the first in the program to be named to the United East All-Conference 1st Team.
Nationally in NCAA Division III men’s volleyball, the 2023-24 Lions finished 8th in aces per set, and 20th in digs per set. During his freshman season, Adan Rodriguez-Sapien finished 5th in the nation in digs per set. The Lions finished second in aces per set and in digs per set in the United East Conference. Both Bryan Coute and Adan Rodriguez-Sapien were named offensive and defensive Players of the Week by the United East, marking the first time any player from the program earned these awards.
Prior to his time at Bryn Athyn, Barshinger was the first head coach of men’s volleyball at Wilson College from 2015 – 2017 and led the program to key wins over Keuka, D’Youville, and Arcadia. During his time with the Phoenix, he guided athletes as they achieved NEAC Player of the Week and All-NEAC awards, as well as numerous top ten statistical finishes in the conference. He also helped restart the women’s volleyball program as head coach at Central Penn College from 2012 – 2015. The Central Penn program would finish with a 15-6 record by the end of the third season.
At the high school level, Barshinger was named the 2015 YAIAA Coach of the Year for his quick development of the New Oxford High School boys volleyball program over a two-year span from 2013 – 2015. The team finished the 2015 season with an 8-6 record, marking the first winning season for the program in nearly a decade. New Oxford earned a 2nd place finish out of 20 teams at the Elizabethtown tournament, and the season finished with an exciting 16-14 victory in the 5th set over a state-ranked opponent.
More recently, Barshinger helped guide the 2022 Abington High School boys volleyball program to the most winning season in program history. The team finished 13-6 in his single year as head coach before accepting his role at Bryn Athyn College. Prior to that, he worked as an assistant to both the boys and girls teams at Abington since 2019, and made the PIAA District 1 playoffs each season.
Barshinger has run AAU Club Volleyball programs in both South-central PA and the Philadelphia areas. These programs helped develop skill sets for high school student athletes while creating competitive teams that participated in tournaments throughout the Mid-Atlantic region.
As a three year starter for a statewide powerhouse in boys volleyball at Central York High School, Barshinger also played for Yorktowne Volleyball Club and participated in the 1999 USA Volleyball Junior National Championship Tournament in New Orleans, LA. During this time, he was also a member of the Central York basketball team.
While at Central Penn College, Barshinger participated in Basketball, Cross Country, and Golf, and was named Athlete of the Year in 2002. Returning to his high school each day in the spring as a volunteer, Barshinger began his coaching career beside Brad Livingston and Todd Goodling at Central York. He would also continue to play volleyball in sand, grass, and indoor tournaments.
Barshinger is a graduate of Elizabethtown College with a bachelor’s degree in business administration, and a graduate of Central Penn College with an associate’s degree in communications, and is a current member of the American Volleyball Coaches Association. He lives in Philadelphia with his wife, Jenifer, and daughter, Elianna.
