Box Score Bryn Athyn, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn women's volleyball team won a four set thriller over North Eastern Athletic Conference opponent PSU-Harrisburg in Tuesday night action.
The Lions won the match 25-8, 22-25, 25-15, 25-23.
Outside-hitter Kaitlyn Brock posted an impressive 20 kills, seven digs and two service aces. Cree Gurney notched nine digs, five aces and five kills. Middle-blocker Taylor Davis had seven kills, four block assists and three solo blocks. Middle-hitter Holly Adams put up seven kills and two digs. Haley Schmucker had a season high 36 assists and 11 digs, while Cathleen Curran notched a career high 34 digs.
Led by senior Gurney, the Lions raced out to a 12-0 lead at the beginning of the first set. Davis kept the Nittany Lions at bay with 3.5 blocks until they got on the board. Bryn Athyn stretched out to a 17-1 lead and they would keep the lead for the remainder of the set en route to a 25-8 win.
Bryn Athyn put together a 6-2 run, but PSUH would come back to tie the second set at 7-7 all. Both teams would exchange leads until both teams tied the game at 20-20, before the Nittany Lions took charge and finished the set 25-22.
The Lions raced out to a 14-8 edge at the beginning of the third set and never looked back, winning the third set 25-15. Adams and Brock had three kills each, and the defense had a match high 24 digs.
In set four, PSU Harrisburg started on a 20-12 run before the Lions called a timeout to slow down the momentum. Bryn Athyn's Brock countered with three kills and two serving errors by PSUH cut the lead to three points. Gurney had two crucial service aces to bring the Lions within one point. Brock killed the ball from a high outside set by Schmucker to bring the game to 20-21. PSU Harrisburg scored two more points to take a three-point lead, in hopes of taking the match to five sets. But the Lions offense came out strong and Brock scored the next five points from the left side to win the game and match 25-23.
Coach Kozar expressed, "I'm very excited how the team came out and finished the game last night. The team had individual goals, which we blew off the charts. We continue to make progress and leaps and bounds as we face new opponents. We hope to continue progressing as we host a tough PSU-Brandywine on Thursday night."
