Hockey Transitions to Club Hockey and Searching for New Coach

2/22/2021 9:30:00 AM

The Bryn Athyn College Men's Ice Hockey program is the longest running sport in the college's history, dating back to the 1920's.

More recently, the program was a nationally-ranked Division III club teams, and in 2016, transitioned to NCAA Division III varsity status, where the program had success and gained the respect of opposing teams.

One of the assumptions in moving to NCAA level play was the expectation that Bryn Athyn Hockey could gain entry to a conference closer to home. Unfortunately, that did not happen, and play continued as an "independent team" that required significant travel to secure games at other schools. This resulted in extensive travel time, missed classes, player fatigue, and increased costs.

This year, across the country, hockey seasons were canceled at the Division III level due to COVID-19. These factors have been carefully considered and discussed at length, and the decision has been made to return to Division III club play starting next year. Bryn Athyn College will begin a search for a new coach and support staff immediately.

President Blair said, "We are so appreciative of the current student-athletes who worked hard to play at a competitive level while in the NCAA. Moving forward, we are excited to see our team play on a regular basis on home ice, along with the sense of community and fun that our teams have enjoyed in the past. Go Lions!"
