Box Score CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Bryn Athyn made the trip down to Maryland on Friday to open their weekend series with the Washington College Shoremen. The Lions competed hard, climbing back from a 15 point deficit to take the lead, before eventually falling 79-66.

How it happened: The Lions came out the gate strong taking a four point lead, 7-3, on contributions from Jaryn McCann who opened the scoring on a wide open layup created from a great pass by fellow junior, Dante Lanzetta. Haybert Louchie knocked down a wing three and freshman Jamal Cannady Jr. drew a foul and knocked down both free throws. The Shoremen's Derrick Carter responded with his own one man run knocking down three shots beyond the arc. The Lions and Shoremen would battle back and forth and exchange baskets until 7:53 mark. At 7:53 mark, Bryn Athyn was down 21-20. Over the next six and half minutes, Washington College built a 38-23 lead. The Lions responded with their own 8-2 run in the final 1:16 seconds to be down 40-31 at half.

The first six minutes of the first half saw both teams exchanging baskets with neither team making any significant headway to cut into the deficit from the Lions' end or build a lead on the Shoremen side. With the score at 51-40 and the clock showing 14:20, the Lions put together one of their best stretches of the season going on a 16-5 run over the next five minutes. Freshman Jamal Cannady Jr was responsible for seven of the sixteen points. Isaiah Cureton, Haybert Louchie, and Anthony Burr all added three points to assist in the run. The teams exchanged baskets with Washington College building a one point advantage over the next three minutes. The Lions went cold from the field for four minutes of the game and the Shoremen capitalized with a 10-0 run to put them up 70-58. The Lions and Washington exchanged baskets in the final three minutes, and the Lions dropped a hard fought game to the score of 79-66 to Washington College.

By the numbers: The Lions had three players in double figures: Haybert Louchie leading the way with 15 points and two steals, Anthony Burr had a season high 14 points to go along with a season high nine rebounds and four dimes, Jamal Cannady Jr. had a career high 13 points with three rebounds and two steals. Tariq Moore and Isaiah Cureton scored nine points and eight points off the bench, respectively.

What the coach said: "I am proud of the way we fought and competed," said Coach Sean Westerlund. "We have been challenging our guys on the concept to choose your hard. Losing is hard and winning is hard. The choice is up to us collectively to do the hard things to win or experience the hardships of losing. I loved the fight to come back from 15 down and take a lead. I thought we responded to their zone looks fairly well, and we created and attacked advantages situations very well. We need to knockdown shots, and do better in attacking their man defense. I thought Jamal Cannady Jr. played the best game of his young career here. I am just so happy he could have a moment like he did tonight because I know how hard he has worked." Coach Westerlund added, "Washington is strong team. Coach Goodman does an excellent job, and their is a reason why they have made consecutive playoff appearances in the one of the toughest leagues in the country. I am proud of our guys, but we are not satisfied. We are excited to be on the hunt again tomorrow."

What's next: Bryn Athyn travels back down to Chestertown, Md. to close out their 2021 season tomorrow at 7pm.
