Women's basketball falls to Immaculata in season opener

IMMACULATA, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College women's basketball turned in a strong defensive effort, but couldn't overcome 35 turnovers in a narrow 50-41 non-conference loss to Immaculata University in the season opener for both teams Wednesday night in Alumnae Hall.

Even though the Lions (0-1) had 28 turnovers in the opening three quarters, Bryn Athyn led 34-31 going into the final 10 minutes. Midway the final quarter, Immaculata broke a 37-all tie with five straight points to take a 42-37 with 5:37 left. After Allie Warren made a layup coming out of a timeout to close the gap to three, the Mighty Macs (1-0) ran eight consecutive points to take an 11-point lead, their largest of the game, with 1:07 to play.

Bryn Athyn trailed 10-6 in the first quarter when Clayshonia Cogmon made a free throw in jumpstart an 8-0 run over the final 3:40 of the quarter to give the Lions a 14-10 lead.

Both teams struggled to find their shooting touch in the second quarter. Bryn Athyn shot 1-of-12 (8.3 percent) from the floor, while Immaculata was 2-of-16 (12.5 percent).  The Lions extended their lead to nine (21-12) with 5:21 left in the half when Cogmon went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to cap 7-0 run. Bryn Athyn was up 22-15 at the break.

Zeniyah Sanders—Bryn Athyn's leading scorer with 14 points of 6-of-14 shooting—pushed the Lion advantage to a game-high 11 points (26-15) on a jumper with 7:38 remaining in the third quarter. The Mighty Macs responded with a 16-4 surge to reclaim a one-point cushion (31-30) with 18 seconds left in the quarter on two Shannon Kelly free throws. Warren, who finished the game with eight points, closed out the quarter with a four-point play to put Bryn Athyn back in the lead going to the fourth.

The Bryn Athyn defense held Immaculata to 18-of-67 (26.9 percent) shooting overall, including a 0-of-19 clip from 3-point range. Led by 17 rebounds from Cogman, the Lions dominated the glass, outrebounding the Mighty Macs 54-39.

Bryn Athyn finished the game shooting 15-of-51 (29.4 percent), 2-of-10 from behind the arc.

Natalie Ayoub paced Immaculata with a game-high 16 points, while Theresa Kearney added 11 points and eight rebounds.

Bryn Athyn heads to Neumann University to participate in the Neumann Tip-Off Tournament on Nov. 18 and 19. The Lions open the tournament against Misericordia on the 18th at 3 p.m.
