Ice hockey knocked off by SUNY Cortland 5-2

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn men's ice hockey team was defeated by visiting SUNY Cortland 5-2 Sunday afternoon in Junge Pavilion.

After falling behind 1-0 on a power-play goal just over seven minutes into the game, the Lions (6-8-1) struck back with two goals separated by 34 seconds to take a 2-1 lead. Anthony Notorfrancesco scored his second goal of the season at 13:17. At 13:51, Nikita Smirnov recorded his fourth goal, second in the last three times, to put Bryn Athyn up 2-1.

Cortland (7-9-0)—who owned a 50-17 shot advantage—took over the rest of the contest, scoring the final four goals of the afternoon. 

Connor Beck leveled the score at two with 2:16 remaining in the first period. In the second period, Michael Faliero put the Red Dragons ahead 3-2 with a power-play goal at 10:48 and Andrew McCann followed up at 17:35 by scoring at even strength to make the score 4-2. Scott Docherty concluded the scoring when he scored on the power play just 1:33 into the final period.

McKenzie Chalmers had a busy afternoon in the Bryn Athyn net as he stopped a career-high 45 shots. It was his third game with at least 40 saves this season. Drew Weigman made 17 stops for Cortland.

The Red Dragons were 3-for-9 on the power play, while the Lions went 0-for-4 on the man advantage.

Bryn Athyn closes out its seven-game homestand with a weekend series against Aquinas starting on Friday, Jan. 19 at 7 p.m. in Junge Pavilion.
