Women's basketball upended by Penn State Brandywine

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – The Bryn Athyn College women's basketball team opened the 2018 portion of its schedule with a 50-44 non-conference loss to Penn State Brandywine Friday night in Asplundh Field House.

Shaneika Smith came off the Bryn Athyn bench to record a game-high 11 points. Allie Warren knocked down a trio of 3-pointers as part of a nine-point, six-rebound evening. Clayshonia Cogmon added eight points, a game-high 10 rebounds, and three steals.

Bryn Athyn (4-8) entered the final quarter down 37-30 after being outscored 21-13 during the third period. The Nittany Lions (7-5) scored on their first possession of the quarter to widen the gap to 39-30.

Then, Cogmon hit a running floater in the lane to spark a 12-2 run that allowed Bryn Athyn to erase the deficit and take a 42-41 lead with 4:28 left in the game. Five different players contributed to the run. Smith and Warren each hit from 3-point range, while Anja Weisser and Myah Phillips added a basket. Phillips' 15-footer from the right wing put Bryn Athyn in the lead.

After swapping one-point leads on consecutive possessions, the Nittany Lions' Brandi James went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to tie the score at 44 with 1:51 remaining. A Chrissy Gledhill free throw just over a minute later gave the visitors a 45-44 lead. Alyssa Abbonizio delivered the final blow when she knocked down a 3-pointer with 11 seconds left to make the score 48-44.

Bryn Athyn missed its final four shots from the field in the final 1:51.

A strong defensive effort allowed Bryn Athyn to lead 13-8 after the opening ten minutes. Bryn Athyn held Penn State Brandywine to 21.4 percent (3-of-14) shooting and forced seven turnovers.

The Lion lead reached a game-high nine points on a Warren triple at the 7:05 mark of the second quarter. However, the Nittany Lions scored the final eight points of the quarter to cut the Lion lead to 17-16 at the half.

Nikki Velez and Gledhill both scored 10 points for Penn State Brandywine, while Brandi James had nine points and 10 rebounds.

Bryn Athyn shot 28.3 percent (17-of-60) overall, 43.8 percent (7-of-16) from 3-point range. Penn State Brandywine ended the game shooting 27.1 percent (16-of-59), 29.2 percent (7-of-24) from behind the arc.

Bryn Athyn returns to North Eastern Athletic Conference play on Wednesday, Jan. 10 at Penn State Abington at 8 p.m.
