CANTON, N.Y. – The Bryn Athyn College ice hockey team concluded its most successful season since joining the NCAA on a high note, getting goals from six different players in a 7-4 triumph over SUNY Canton Sunday afternoon.
Bryn Athyn ends the 2019-20 season with a 12-10-3 overall record. The 12 wins are the most in a single-season in the program's three-year NCAA history and it is the first time the Lions end the season with a winning record. Bryn Athyn also set single-season records for goals in a season (81), goals per game (3.24), points per game (8.44), goals against average (3.00), and penalty kill percentage (82.8).
Vojtech Luza recorded a pair of goals for Bryn Athyn—including the game winner. Sheldon Brett, Brett Dillon, Peter Falivena, Tanner Schroeder, and Dakota Ulmer all added one goal.
The Lions dominated the opening 20 minutes for action and jumped out to a 4-0 advantage.
Brett needed just 26 seconds to get the Lions on the board with his fourth goal of the season. He took a cross-ice pass from Devon Becker in the Lions' defensive zone and skated the length of the ice until he fired a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle that trickled through Roos goaltender Austin Washkurak.
Dillon doubled the lead at 5:08 when he slammed home the rebound of his initial one-timer in the slot. Nick Malvasi and Becker both assist on Dillon's second goal.
Falivena and the Lions made the Roos pay for a turnover in their own zone with their third goal at 9:15. He received a pass from Dillon and then beat Washkurak on the short side for his fourth goal. Malvasi started the play by stealing the puck along the right boards and quickly getting the puck to Dillon.
Schroeder capped off the offensive explosion with a breakaway goal at 17:41 after receiving a pass from Jake Heckenberger.
Canton (11-9-3) and Bryn Athyn traded goals in the second period to make the score 5-1 after 40 minutes of play. Brett Bannister scored Canton's first goal on a Bryn Athyn power play 35 seconds before the game's midway point. Luza restored the four-goal margin at 15:56, picking up the puck at the Lion blue line, skating into the offensive end, and finding the upper-right corner of the goal.
After Canton pulled within 5-2, Ulmer scored another breakaway goal, deking around Michael Cerasuolo, and tucking the puck into the net on his forehand at 11:25. Heckenberger found the streaking Ulmer with a long outlet pass for his second assist of the game.
The Roos attempted a rally with goals from Bannister and Tyson Bruce to cut the gap to 6-4, but Luza put the game away with an empty-net goal.
Ismael Ralsten made 32 saves to record his fourth victory of the year (4-3-0). Washkurak made six saves in the first period and Cerasuolo stopped 17 saves over the final two periods.
