The eighth season of Bryn Athyn women's basketball is slated to begin this weekend, as the Lions are set to host Lancaster Bible (Pa.) in a back-to-back series on Friday and Saturday at the Asplundh Field House. The season will have a different look, but the scheduled eight games are crucial to the building process of the program under second-year head coach
Travis Ponton.
Last season, Bryn Athyn posted a 6-19 overall record—a three-win improvement from the 2018-19 season—and finished 5-13 against the Colonial States Athletic Conference. Bryn Athyn finished the season 16
th in Division III with 17.6 offensive rebounds per game and 42
nd with 11.7 steals per game. The 11.7 steals per game are the third-most in program history.
Clayshonia Cogmon—an All-CSAC honorable mention selection—finished seventh in Division III with 5.3 offensive rebounds per game and 21
st with 3.24 steals per game.
Head Coach
Travis Ponton talked about his expectations on the season, "Our program is very fortunate to have the opportunity to compete this season, and we remain grateful to our wonderful administration here at Bryn Athyn for affording us this experience. The commitment to our student athlete experience here has always been at the forefront, and many hours of work has been put into the COVID-19 efforts here on our campus throughout this year. Our team continues to show our gratitude as we remain committed to protecting the Pride!"
On the season: "For us, this shortened season provides us with a chance to continue to build upon all that we accomplished last year. That dramatic 4th quarter comeback win to wrap up our season last year is still fresh in our hearts and minds, and serves as a launchpad for the future. Both of our seniors, Clay Cogmon and Jayda Campbell are headed for graduation this spring and then the next chapter of their lives, so we are happy to give them some sort of season as well," Ponton said. "All of us have been through so much through this pandemic, and basketball continues to be something we can all turn to in challenging times, bringing us together to share in something that we love with people that we care about. This basketball season will certainly be unlike any other, and there are plenty of challenges we must continue to overcome together. We have a good portion of our team here on campus, and we're ready to get the ball bouncing again, so February 26 can't get here soon enough! We look forward to this eight game season serving as another launchpad for our program moving forward!"
This year's team is slated to play two games at Asplundh Field House and six more on the road, and will look to build upon the improvement they saw last year where the Lions were one of the most formidable pressing teams in the region.
