2021 Men's Basketball Preview

2/23/2021 10:00:00 AM

The eighth season of Bryn Athyn Men's basketball is on tap to start this weekend, as the Lions are set to host Lancaster Bible (Pa.) in a Friday-Saturday series at the Asplundh Field House. The 2021 season will have an unprecedented look, but provides an essential opportunity for the Lions to begin the building process under first-year head coach Sean Westerlund.

The Lions are set to play eight games during the shortened 2021 season, and look build on a much improved 2020 calendar year and start the new journey as a program with head coach Sean Westerlund at the helm.

Last season, Bryn Athyn posted a 5-20 overall record—putting together a 5-7 record in 2020—and finished with a 4-10 record in Colonial States Athletic Conference play. Bryn Athyn ranked 3rd in the CSAC in team scoring defense with 78.8 PPG. Tariq Moore—an All-CSAC honorable mention selection—finished top ten in points, rebounds and steals in the CSAC averaging 17.5 PPG, 6.2 RPG, and 2.6 SPG.

The Coach Says: "I am thrilled for our student-athletes to have this experience. This year has brought on unprecedented challenges for our young men, and they have been absolute rock stars through this difficult time. Our administration has been steadfast in giving this opportunity to our players, and for that we are grateful," Westerlund said. "The challenges COVID has provided, allowed a unique opportunity to really dive deeper into our connection, which is our greatest gift. I am excited to see our men put into practice everything we've worked on off the floor and implement that on to the court."

On Expectations in Year One: "It has been a different year without question. It has required us to remain flexible in our process, and we are excited for a chance to begin this journey together. We recognize that the journey we are heading on will be difficult, but fulfilling. We are on the hunt to make history and do something that has never been done here before," Westerlund shared. "This has required a unique focus and total alignment in establishing the standards and processes for what it means to be a Bryn Athyn Men's Basketball program member across the board from the classroom-to the weight room-to the court. These eight games will be a great opportunity to gauge where we are at as a program. We will be implementing a new style of play that we believe our guys will thrive in and our supporters will love. I can guarantee to you will see a team with great energy and a will to compete."

Bryn Athyn will be the road warriors this season with two games scheduled at Asplundh Field House and six contests on the road, and will usher in a new era of Bryn Athyn basketball.

Program Notes
-Through seven seasons of play, Bryn Athyn has an overall record of 52-124 (.295)
-The Lions have advanced to conference playoffs in one of the past five seasons
-The CSAC will not be playing conference games this season, though teams are allowed to play if they are able to abide by NCAA and local guidelines
-One of Bryn Athyn's 2021 opponents, Lancaster Bible (Pa.), is a former conference opponent from Bryn Athyn's time in the NEAC. Bryn Athyn is 1-9 all time against LBC
- Coach Okoye Taylor joined the coaching staff this year after being the second leading scorer and leading three point shooter for the lions in 2019-2020
- Bryn Athyn went 4-5 at home at Asplundh Field House, 1-12 on the road, and 0-3 in neutral site games

Three Questions for the 2021 Season
1. The Lions put together a tough schedule against the NEAC runner-up (Lancaster Bible), the AEC defending champion (Wesley College), and a Washington College team who has made playoffs the last two seasons in the tough Centennial Conference, how will the team fare? There are lots of new faces, including the head coach, how will the team mesh together in the shortened season with limited court time, and what will each game look like?

2. The team has consistently struggled on the road, how will the Lions make out with six games away from Asplundh Field House?

3. Last year's team played well in spurts and seemed to have turned a corner in the calendar year of 2020. Can the Lions be more consistent this season and put together a full 40-minutes?
