Men's basketball falls to DI NJIT 99-53

NEWARK, N.J. – Rahim Washington had a team-high 16 points for the Bryn Athyn College men's basketball team in a 99-53 setback to Division I NJIT in an exhibition game Friday afternoon in the Wellness and Events Center.

Christian Rivera added eight points and five rebounds, while Devante Laws contributed seven points.

The 53 points for the most scored by Bryn Athyn in three games against Division I competition. The previous high came last season when the Lions put up 51 points in an 84-51 loss to the University of Delaware on Nov. 27, 2016.

Bryn Athyn struggled to find some footing against the Highlanders as NJIT jumped out to a 16-4 lead at the 13:23 mark of the opening half. Then, the Lions found their shooting touch as they made four of their next five shots over a 2:36 span to close the Highlander advantage to 18-14 on a Laws jumper. Laws led the 10-2, which had contributions from four players, with four points. The Bryn Athyn defense held NJIT to 1-of-3 shooting and forced two turnovers.

After NJIT reclaimed a six-point advantage (22-16), Bryn Athyn ran off six of the game's next eight points to make it a one-possession affair with Washington went 1-for-2 at the free throw line to make the score 24-22 with 4:54 left in the half.

The Highlanders closed out the first half by shooting 6-of-12, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range, to lead by a half-high 16 points (43-27) at the break. NJIT closed out the half with three straight successful jumpers.

NJIT pulled away in the second half as the Highlanders outscored the Lions 56-26 on 60.0 percent (21-of-35) shooting. Bryn Athyn shot 11 of 33 during the final 20 minutes.

The Highlanders had 11 players led their name into the scoring column, led by Diandre Wilson's 15 points. Anthony Tarke had 14 points, while David Kachelries came off the bench to score 12 points.

Bryn Athyn finished the game shooting 33.8 percent (22-of-65) from the floor, 20.0 percent (4-of-20) from 3-point range. NJIT hit 54.2 percent (39-of-72) of its shots, including 34.4 percent (11-of-32) of its 3-pointers.

NJIT won the rebounding battle, 53-28.

Bryn Athyn travels to Moravian to play in the Roosevelt's 21st Greyhound Classic on Dec. 30-31. The Lions open the Classic against the host Greyhounds on Dec. 30 at 4:30 p.m.
