Box Score BRYN ATHYN, Pa. – Senior Okoye Taylor played the best game of his Bryn Athyn College career in his final game in Asplundh Field House, scoring a career-high 34 points to lead the Lions to an 84-80 victory over Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) lead Centenary (N.J.) Wednesday night.
Taylor started out the night being recognized by head coach Justin Baxter and the Lions for his four-year career with the team. Then, he went out and shot 7-of-13 from 3-point range—11-of-21 overall—grabbed six rebounds and tallied four assists. He had 21 points in the second half. Taylor easily surpassed his previous career-highs of 24 points and five made 3-pointers, which both occurred in a win at Valley Forge on Jan. 4, 2020.
In a reserve role, Haybert Louchie had a strong performance, knocking down five of his eight 3-point attempts, to record 20 points. Tariq Moore racked up 19 points, five rebounds, five steals, and one assist.
Three-point shooting the difference in the victory. Bryn Athyn made 13 3-pointers on 34 attempts (38.2 percent), while Centenary was just 4-of-22 (18.2 percent). The Lions were also the better free-throw shooting team, going 17-of-24 (70.8 percent) at the stripe compared to 10-of-16 (62.5 percent) for the Cyclones.
Bryn Athyn (5-19, 4-9 CSAC) appeared to have a stranglehold of the contest as Louchie bookended a 10-0 run with two of his 3-pointers to give Bryn Athyn a 63-54 lead. Taylor was responsible for the other four points.
However, Centenary (17-8, 12-2 CSAC) wouldn't go away that easily. The Cyclones would make six of their 12 shots over a six-minute span to outscore the Lions 13-2, capped by a Billy Veras jumper, to retake a two-point lead (67-65) with 6:20 remaining. Veras led Centenary in scoring with 28 points, 22 coming in the first half.
Taylor swung the momentum back in Bryn Athyn's favor by draining a 3-pointer on back-to-back Bryn Athyn possessions to jump-start an 11-2 surge that put the Lions back up by seven (76-69). The Bryn Athyn defense also played a role in the run, holding Centenary to 1-of-6 shooting and forcing two turnovers.
The Lions would hold the Cyclones at bay by shooting 8-of-10 at the free-throw line in the final 45 seconds of the game.
In the opening half, both teams held five-point leads and exchanged the lead eight times. The Lions ended the half leading 40-39.
In addition to his 28 points, Veras grabbed 10 rebounds. Chris Labelle and D'Angelo Blackmond both added 17 points for Centenary, while Tom Weiler had 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Bryn Athyn will look to end the 2019-20 season on a high note when the Lions travel to Rosemont for a CSAC contest on Saturday, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.
